Justice For Families leads grassroots efforts in advocating for policy change to confront systemic harm, reduce youth criminalization, and build community-led solutions grounded in lived experience.
We ensure that those closest to systemic harm are centered in policy conversations. Family and community voices guide every stage of research; engagement; development of outreach, education and training materials; and public policy input.
Our community advocacy programs involve young people in authentic leadership roles. From planning and facilitating workshops and other positive youth development activities to representing their peers at community forums and listening sessions, youth are central to every initiative.
Participants learn how to engage with local government, navigate public meetings, coordinate voter registration drives, and participate in advocacy campaigns that influence decision-making processes.
Our work is grounded in racial and gender equity. Every campaign and partnership reflects our long-term commitment to advocacy for social justice and family-centered reform.

At Justice For Families, advocating for policy change is not just a strategy—it is a central commitment rooted in lived experience, racial equity, and the unwavering belief that systems must be shaped by the communities they impact. As a family-led organization, we recognize that meaningful reform begins with those most affected by injustice taking the lead in identifying problems and designing solutions. Our policy advocacy work uplifts the voices of system-impacted families and youth, ensuring they are not only at the table but actively influencing decisions that affect their lives.
Through intentional organizing, coalition-building, and leadership development, Justice For Families has positioned itself as a trusted leader in advocacy for social justice across local, state, and national levels. We work to dismantle the systemic barriers that criminalize, marginalize, and exclude families—especially families of color-and replace them with structures of care, equity, and accountability.
At Justice For Families, we advocate for social justice to challenge the systemic inequities that overwhelmingly harm Black and Brown communities. Our work centers the voices of those most impacted, ensuring they lead efforts to transform policies, dismantle oppressive systems, and build communities rooted in equity, healing, and accountability. Justice must be community-defined and family-led.

Our Community Peer Navigator (CPN) program supports system-impacted individuals and families in building the knowledge, confidence, and tools needed to lead meaningful change in their communities. Rooted in racial and gender justice, our program is designed to promote civic education, leadership development, healing, and advocacy. By centering those most affected, we help shift power to where it belongs—within the community itself.
At Justice For Families, youth and emerging adults are integral members of our team actively shaping, leading, and evaluating the work we do. We believe that young people bring critical insight, creativity, and leadership to every part of our mission. Whether they come to us through school internships, Summer Youth Employment Programs, reentry after incarceration or system involvement, foster care transitions, or family referrals, all young people are welcomed with a sense of belonging. Our youth leadership development approach supports adolescents in identifying their strengths, exploring their goals and interests, developing skills, and building meaningful connections while working through real-life challenges.
Many young people come to us feeling overwhelmed or uncertain, often seeking independence while working through real and persistent challenges. Our role is not to “fix” them—but to stand beside them, support them in recognizing their strengths, and help them explore:
We work side-by-side with young people to design learning experiences that are engaging, community-based, culturally-rooted and inclusive. These activities aren't limited to youth—they're built to bring together community members of all ages, fostering intergenerational learning and mutual respect. Together, we:
One of our cornerstone programs, Bridges to the Land (B2L), offers system-impacted individuals community gardening and farming experiences. This program supports participants in:
At Justice For Families, we recognize that choice is critical to youth development—especially for those who’ve rarely had the opportunity to make their own decisions. Many of the young people we work with have never had the chance to explore diverse interests.
Not because they lacked curiosity—but because no one had ever offered them those experiences. Our programs create safe and supported spaces for young people to try new things, express themselves, and uncover parts of themselves they may never have known were there.
In 2024, a group of teens from the West Farms neighborhood of the Bronx visited Wall Street with local J4F staff and volunteers to learn about financial systems, career pathways, and the broader structures that shape economic opportunity. The trip also included a stop at the 9/11 Memorial, offering a moment of reflection and historical context. For most participants, it was their first time in downtown Manhattan. The topics—finance, corporate environments, and public history—were unfamiliar and complex, yet sparked curiosity and thoughtful conversation. Experiences like these are powerful for young people whose daily realities have been shaped by instability or limited exposure. They begin to see new possibilities and ask different questions about their futures. At Justice For Families , we provide these opportunities intentionally, combining real-world learning with community support. By connecting young people to unfamiliar spaces and critical knowledge, we help them move from surviving their surroundings to imagining and building something beyond them—with access to the tools needed to get there.
