Training & Technical Assistance

Justice For Families offers structured training and technical assistance services for communities aimed at strengthening leadership, transforming systems, and improving outcomes for justice-involved youth and families.

Our training sessions are grounded in lived experience, rooted in racial and gender equity, respectful of diverse learning styles; informed by the direct involvement of impacted families and youth; and customized to a jurisdiction’s own interests, strengths, needs and shared values.

For Family & Community Leaders

Our training opportunities for family and community leaders center on the lived experience of those most impacted by juvenile justice and family regulation systems. We offer deep, sustained learning spaces designed to strengthen knowledge, confidence, and leadership. These sessions, which may be offered in-person or virtually, prepare family leaders to take action within their communities and local systems—and ensure their voices influence practice and policy.

Key Components of J4F Training Models

  • Orientation and Opening Circle: Participants build group trust, set agreements, and meet trainers who share their lived experience in justice systems.
  • J4F Overview: Introduces Justice For Families’s core leadership framework, with goals focused on empowerment, peer support, and informed advocacy.
  • Understanding Family Engagement in Juvenile Justice: Covers adolescent development, trauma, the Ladder of Engagement, and systemic barriers faced by families.
  • Goal-Setting for Local Engagement: Participants create a vision, define outcomes, and build a plan to strengthen family participation in systems.
  • Youth and Family Perspectives: Strategic sharing from lived-experience experts  illustrates how peer leadership transforms engagement and outcomes.
  • Research-Informed Strategies: Draws on national studies co-led by Justice For Families to identify best practices, lessons learned, and replicable pathways to change.
  • Action Planning and Implementation Support: Small group work sessions support development of technical assistance plans, next steps, and locally relevant engagement strategies.

  • Creates Pathways for Replication and Growth:  Models can be implemented in new communities and adapted for various organizational and system contexts.
  • Encourages Sustainable Change: By centering community members in leadership roles, J4F trainings promote long-term transformation that lasts beyond the session itself.
Community Peer Navigator Training

Community Peer Navigator Training

Justice For Families Community Peer Navigator Training equips system-impacted individuals to become trusted leaders in their communities. Grounded in lived experience, the training prepares participants to support other families navigating youth justice and family regulation systems. It combines practical tools, emotional insight, and structured curriculum from our Family Leadership Institute. Participants develop the skills to engage, inform, and advocate for families in real-time—transforming personal experience into collective leadership. This training also integrates research findings and best practices gathered nationally to guide systems in becoming more responsive, accountable, and family-centered.

For System Professionals

Our work with system professionals—from juvenile justice staff to case workers and policy advisors—focuses on redefining relationships with youth and families. Improving Outcomes by Partnering with Youth and Families  training addresses the structural gaps that limit family involvement and explores effective approaches to collaboration.

We equip professionals with frameworks that move beyond compliance toward genuine partnership. Using our skill-building program, we address topics such as trauma, adolescent development, racial equity, and the value of youth voice. These sessions are designed to help professionals reflect on their own practices and integrate family engagement into their everyday work.

For System Professionals
  • Deepen Understanding of Authentic Family Engagement: Professionals learn how to move beyond procedural involvement to create meaningful, collaborative relationships with families across service settings.
  • Integrate Commnunity Voice into Decision-Making: Training emphasizes the importance of youth and family perspectives, and shared leadership in shaping effective interventions.
  • Apply Trauma-Responsive Practices in Daily Work: Participants explore the impact of trauma on families and receive guidance on how to build trust and reduce harm through everyday interactions.
  • Address Structural Inequities with Awareness and Intention: We provide tools to recognize racial and socioeconomic disparities in child welfare and justice systems; and support staff in working toward equitable outcomes.
  • Strengthen Communication and Planning Across Teams: Professionals practice skills that improve coordination, cultural responsiveness, and engagement across multidisciplinary teams serving justice-impacted youth and families.
